The History of GASP
Shiner's bicycle history began with a G.A.S.P. The Great Austin to Shiner Pedal was started by a few loyal Shiner Bock fans in Austin, Texas in the mid 1980s. The event was an annual pilgrimage to the Spoetzl Brewery, in Shiner, Texas, from Austin, Texas. G.A.S.P. was a fall event that grew in popularity and in only a few years grew to more than a thousand bike riders.
In 1998, Shiner B.A.S.H. (Bike Austin San Antonio Houston) replaced G.A.S.P., and was moved to the spring to take advantage of the better weather and the spring break holiday for college students. Shiner B.A.S.H. attracted more riders with the addition of Houston and San Antonio starting points. All three cities are roughly an equal distance to the brewery—90 miles.
Riders were greeted at the grounds adjacent to the brewery, with a hot meal, cool refreshments, comfortable shade trees and green grass, music and fun. Cyclists were treated to brewery tours and samples of fine Shiner products.
In 2007 as the Spoetzl Brewery came closer to its 100 year anniversary we decided to return to Shiner's roots with Shiner GASP. Texas’ most unique cycling event has continued to grow and this year's event is ready for a record number of riders and guests. More than 1,500 riders are expected this year!
With only one more year until the Spoetzl Brewery celebrates its 100th Anniversary, with the success of last years Shiner GASP and as 2008 marks the Spoetzl Brewery’s 99th anniversary we will once again have the Shiner GASP finish on the grounds of the historic Spoetzl Brewery. Riders will be greeted with a hot meal, cool refreshments, live music??? and FREE Shiner Beer. This is one ride you will not want to miss!
